Warren Cohen of Music Nova recently wrote of Patrick:
"one of the most talented composers I have
and about last season says:
"It was interesting to hear all the talk that your Symphony generated in
the orchestra after we did it. It really made an impression on people.
The positive part was that most people really liked the music- it was
truly one of the hits of the season for a lot of people. That is
something you should feel very proud of given the competition!"
Patrick is multi-talented in the world of music and performing arts, and a gifted composer.
He has created many works for his own fulfillment, in particular his symphonies and concertos.
However, he also needs to make a living! So please feel free to contact him regarding commissioning a piece of music for yourself, your orchestra or ensemble.
Music-to-Measure... Patrick also has had an innovative idea for producing smaller pieces of work for the general public. For many years Patrick has composed short pieces of music as gifts for family and friends to mark a special occasion. He has long felt that this idea of creating small pieces of music for individuals at a modest price - like commissioning a photo or artwork to commemorate a wedding or person or achievement would be of great interest. Patrick Jonathan's setting of 'O Magnum Mysteriurm' for SATB, Oboe, Fluegelhorn, Piano and String Quartet, is to be premiered by Lisa Ho and Cantus Musicus, who commissioned the setting, at their Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Kuala Lumpur in December, 2014.
There are two new arrangements available of Patrick Jonathan's popular 'Meditation', both offering opportunities for flexible instrumentation. The first is for SATB, Oboe, Fluegelhorn, Piano and String Quartet and the second for SSA and the same instrumentation.
Both arrangements can be performed with Clarinet substituting for Oboe; Clarinet, Trumpet, Cor Anglais or French Horn substituting for Fluegelhorn; and a String Quartet that can be boosted by an optional Double Bass part and performed using a full string section if so desired.
Members of Cantus Musicus premiered Patrick Jonathan's Madrigal, 'Hark, Happy Lovers, Hark' at a special concert held at the British High Commissioner's Residence in K.L. on 20th February, 2014. The choir is now rehearsing the complete set of 'Five Madrigals' for a performance in late September/early October, 2014, venue yet to be confirmed.
The virtuoso percussion ensemble, Ensamble de percusión Percanto, are recording Patrick Jonathan's 'KLANG!' for inclusion on their upcoming CD release. They gave a repeat public performance of the piece - that they had premiered in 2012 - in Medellin, Colombia on 7th October, 2013. An excellent video of this performance can be viewed on YouTube:

Patrick Jonathan has composed a jazz-inflected song cycle entitled, 'Swing, Sweet William, Swing', based on 7 poems from William Blake's 'Songs of Innocence and Experience', for Los Angeles based jazz icons, Corliss Dale and Lou Forestieri. Written for voice and piano, these songs are eminently suited to performance by vocalist and jazz trio.
Russian piano virtuoso, Rustem Hayroudinoff, gives a shout out to Patrick Jonathan's '24 Preludes for Piano' in his interview with Frances Wilson for her 'Cross-eyed Pianist' blog. Check out the link here:
In January 2013, Kevin Field, Musical Director of the MYPO, and Principal of the Bentley Academy of Music, formed a new percussion ensemble which has been named after Patrick Jonathan's composition, 'KLANG!'. Check out the link here: http://www.bma.com.my/klang.html
Patrick Jonathan's KLANG now exists in a second scoring for 4 marimbas, 2 pianos and 2 multi-percussionists. This arrangement was made at the request of Kevin Field to match the make-up of the percussion section of the Malaysian Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
A selection of Patrick Jonathan’s Preludes for Piano were used as exam pieces at the Royal Academy of Music in London by students of Rustem Hayroudinoff, the dedicatee of ’24 Preludes for piano’, in May.
April 2012 saw the world premier of Patrick Jonathan’s ‘KLANG!’ for percussion ensemble by ‘Ensamble Percanto’ at Universitad EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia. This represented the composer’s first documented performance in South America.
In November 2011, extracts from Patrick Jonathan’s 2nd Symphony were used as incidental music for a production of ‘Eurydice’ by Sarah Ruhl at Washington University, St. Louis, USA.
Patrick has written a text and orchestrated the Meditation from 2005, and the Malay language version of this piece will be performed twice at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre by the Music Department of UiTM on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July, 2011. This is the second year running that Patrick has had a piece included in the UiTM Malaysian Composers Showcase.
An anonymous pianist has posted a video of himself reading through the opening of Patrick's Piano Sonata No 2 on YouTube. Click here to watch it.

A chamber group from UiTM is showcasing music by Malaysian composers at KLPAC, Pentas 2 in two concerts on Saturday 7th August and Sunday 8th August 2010. These concerts will include performances of the first movement of Patrick's String Quartet, composed in KL during 2005 and 2006. Details about the concerts can also be found here.
At the request of Rustem Hayroudinoff, Patrick has revised the 24 Preludes in 3 Movements and produced a version in which all of the preludes are separate, titled - simply - 24 Preludes for Piano. The score of this revised set is available via this website, and individual preludes could be produced for purchase on request. Please contact this website directly with any requests.
Patrick's most recent composition is a set of 24 preludes for piano in all the major and minor keys, fashioned into an extended concert item by being structured as 3 continuous movements. The preludes were inspired by a conversation with the great pianist, Rustem Hayroudinoff - to whom they are dedicated, who commented that a set of preludes was a good idea as they could be whatever one wants them to be.
Patrick has also recently completed Postcards from K.L., a five-movement, impressionistic portrait of a day in the life of the beautiful city in which he lives. This was commissioned by Bill Perry for a proposed recording project of the Swiss Duo Albek, and, in addition to violin and piano, utilises a battery of exotic Eastern as well as more familiar Western percussion instruments.
